Labour’s criticism of spending cuts in Bristol took a pounding at the city council’s big budget debate tonight.

Liberal Democrats running Bristol City Council tonight spelled out the importance of a new project to develop the hydrogen economy.

Hitting back at “small-minded” opposition critics of plans to test-run a hydrogen ferry in the harbour, they said the development of such an economy would bring vital private sector jobs to Bristol.

Labour and the Tories wanted to axe the £225,000 project although £160,000 is already spent and would be wasted if it were cancelled now.

Councillor Neil Harrison, assistant executive for sustainability in the Lib Dem administration, said: “The project is not about running a ferry.

“This is simply the starting point. It is about seeding a hydrogen economy in Bristol and making sure that this city has a stake in a multi-billion pound industry that’s creating jobs and wealth the world over.

“And it’s working already. The consortium have, in the first month of the project, been approached by a new company from outside the area wanting to contribute its own expertise and innovation to Bristol’s fledgling hydrogen economy. We hope this will be the first of many.

“The consortium have also been invited to apply for two international maritime engineering prizes – even before the ferry is built. Clearly, business values the project.

“We will shortly be commissioning a strategy paper on how the city grows out from the ferry project to other economic opportunities, working with partners like Low Carbon South West and the Green Capital Momentum Group.

“We have a clear vision for making Bristol an economic powerhouse of green technology.”
